African Bread Fruits(ukwa)
African Bread Fruits is a food popular among the Igbos, Bread Fruit is called Afon by the Yoruba, ukwa by the Igbos, Ediang by the efik and Ibibio, nze by the Benin and bafutata by the Hausa. Though based on a discussion I had with my friends, it is said that the bread fruit tree is going extinct and as such its limited availability in the market.
The small brown seed have groundnut flavor when roasted and it can be eaten whole, or made into a paste for sauce. At times, it is made into refreshing drinks as well as making bread fruit cakes, snacks and cookies.
Breadfruit is a tropical fruit, belonging to the Moraceae family. It is related to other exotic fruits like bread nut, jack fruit, figs and mulberries. Breadfruit is a staple food in many tropical regions. The fruit can be roasted, baked, fried and even boiled before consumption. The flesh of the breadfruit has a nice fragrance and a sweet taste.
